Let’s talk the intimacy of silence for a moment.
When you sit back and count the number of lines Myka has spoken to Helena directly in S3, it amounts to these two scenes and exactly TWO questions of who and where related to the case. For all intensive purposes, she has distanced herself as much as possible from Helena. You can feel the distance Myka is trying to put between them, even in her blocking- looking down, placing Claudia or Pete between them, remaining strangely silent where normally we would hear her voice.
And yet you can also feel the way she is losing that battle within herself because the intimacy between the two of them endures.
Part of it is because Helena is so open to getting ANYTHING from Myka. In most cases in the latest episode when Helena speaks, it is almost exclusively at Myka, even when talking to Pete or Artie. But Myka also slips, doing the same thing by talking through other people, directing questions and statements to Pete or Artie but looking at Helena. And there are times when neither speaks out loud, but they engage in silent communication. It is an interesting choice because not only does it show rather than tell that that intimacy is still intact, it makes it so that when they really DO talk, to each other, out loud, there is a power in that choice. That Myka allows Helena to talk to her at the end about them and not the case, that her tone matches the soft, personal tone of Helena’s greeting from the first episode where before Myka was cold and shutting her down, that she actually calls her HELENA at all shows the increments of forgiveness she is allowing her.
To let someone in, particularly back in, is a huge choice, and the impact of Myka calling her Helena again for the first time, and not the “wise and psychotic woman” or her or HG, packs a wallop of a punch and sends the message home that there is a change, without anvils falling from the sky.
And I love that a show that has terrible CGI effects, nerdy Ducktales-esque treasure hunts and enough allusions to literature, history and myth to put the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to shame, can also be a great showcase of subtley and “show, don’t tell.” It is not a perfect show but any means, but it has certainly shown that it is capable of creating quality moments despite its limited budget, mostly when it focuses on the characters we love and they allow the moments to breathe.
It is something I wish other shows with bigger budgets would learn. Flash is no substitute for substance. Actors who truly know their characters trump stunt guest star casting every time if you give them the chance to shine.
Sometimes silence is the most powerful tool of all.
I KNOW RIGHT? OH MY GOD IT’D BE SO AMAZING! YES PLEASE.
BUT SHE’S DOING “MUCH ADO” WITH DAVID SO IDK IDK.
